In this article:
Appointment Types can be used to differentiate patient appointments, to set events in the appointment book, or to configure an Appointment Schedule.
There are two ways that the Appointment Type can be set.
Manually
If you prefer to set an appointment type on a case by case basis, or to vary from the scheduled appointment types, this can be done using the steps below.
- Click on the appointment
- Click on the Appointment Type dropdown menu
- Select the appropriate type
- Choose Save to finalise the change
Automatically
If you have a schedule set up in the Appointment Book, any appointments added on this schedule will automatically have this Appointment Type applied.
Gentu has two default Appointment Types in all databases - Appointment and Procedure. These cannot be edited and will always appear at the top of the Appointment Types Legend.
There are three ways you can determine the Appointment Type applied to each appointment.
- The Appointment Type can be viewed on each appointment itself.
- An appointment can be opened to view or change the Type.
- The color of the appointment can be compared to the Legend on the left of the Appointment Book.
- Navigate to Settings > Appointment Types
- Click on the small + icon
- Enter a name for this Appointment Type (e.g. Antenatal, Unavailable, Follow-up)
- Enter the desired duration for this appointment type (e.g. 60 minutes)
- Select a colour
- Press Save.
The newly added Appointment Type will now be available in the Appointment Book.
Please note:
- If no duration time is entered when saving a new Appointment Type, the default Appointment Interval that is set in Practice Hours (Settings> Practice Hours) will be used automatically.
- You may need to update your existing Appointment Types' durations if you change the global appointment interval in Settings > Practice Hours.
Edit Existing Appointment Types
- Navigate to Settings > Appointment Types
- Click on the name of the Appointment Type you wish to edit
- Make the desired changes
- Select Save.

How do you remove an appointment type? and is it possible to reorder the list
Hi Dr Pickering,
At present, it isn't possible for Appointment Types to be deleted, and the list will always appear alphabetically - it cannot be rearranged.
Will Genie/Gentu be looking at being able to remove an appointment type?
